Drives that deliver

Vacon has always focused solely on variable-speed AC drives and is now the world’s largest dedicated producer. As a result, it has been able to develop a unique body of expertise in the field and a steadily growing portfolio that now includes the Vacon 100 Motor Mountable.

Vacon’s unique variable-speed AC drives are highly efficient, reliable, and easy to run, and offer valuable savings in energy usage and overall costs. Varying the speed of induction or synchronous motors by adjusting the frequency and voltage of their power supply, rather than running them at a constant speed, also enables processes to be controlled very precisely.

Replacing a fixed-speed drive with a variable-speed one in a fan or pump, for example, can save 10-30% of the energy normally needed, without impacting process performance. This is particularly highlighted when full output is not required. A ventilation system running at 90% load and powered by a Vacon drive, for example, requires only around 70% of the energy of a fixed-speed solution.

This can be particularly useful in smaller, stand-alone systems on board ships and drilling rigs, where AC drives can save substantial amounts of diesel fuel compared to hydraulic control systems. As AC drives use only active power, generators do not need to generate reactive power, which results in less load.

The new space-saver

Long known for the modularity of its designs, Vacon has now taken this one step further with the launch of the Vacon 100 Motor Mountable AC drive. This is the first Vacon product designed to be located as close to a motor as possible, typically on the motor or the machine it is driving.

Available in ratings up to 30 kW, this decentralised concept is ideal for applications that have been limited to traditional cabinet solutions up until now. The benefits are very obvious, as the Vacon 100 Motor Mountable does away with the need for separate electrical rooms and long shielded motor cables, complex wiring, and drive cabinets.

The Vacon 100 Motor Mountable drive is also tough and capable of handling harsh environments, while delivering silky smooth control in a wide range of applications, such as high-power pumps, fans, and compressors.

Part of the renewable revolution

With over 10 years of experience in massproduced regenerative power converters and inverters, Vacon has delivered over 5 GW of power capacity in renewable energy applications to date. Solar inverters, such as the new Vacon 8000 Solar, play a vital role in linking solar panels to the grid by converting photovoltaic power into AC .

With a power range of 10 to 1,000 kW, the Vacon 8000 Solar is based on the same technology as the company’s industrial AC drives. Combining well-tested, high-quality industrial inverter modules with innovative Solar Multimaster software – which can reduce the wear and tear on individual modules by 40% compared to a conventional solution – Vacon now has a very competitive offering for solar applications.

For wind power applications, Vacon offers inverter modules for doubly-fed converters, fullpower converter modules, and AC drives for yaw, pitch, and auxiliary control.
