Cargotec expands R&D in Asia
Cargotec is to establish a global competence centre for container terminal development in Singapore. Building on the know-how acquired through the acquisition of Navis, a leading terminal operator systems (TOS) provider, (see our news item), the new centre will strengthen Cargotec’s ability to provide total solutions for its container terminal customers across the Asia-Pacific region.
As one of the world's largest ports, Singapore offers a unique perspective on customer trends, requirements, and future needs, says the company. Accounting for 40% of total sales in 2010, the Asia-Pacific region is one of Cargotec’s main growth areas today.
Cargotec has been present in Singapore for more than 30 years, and currently employs around 450 people there, representing the company's Hiab, Kalmar, MacGregor, and Bromma brands. Cargotec's other Asian production units are based in China, India, Korea, and Malaysia.
A joint product development unit was completed at Pune in India in 2008 and specialises in three key areas of expertise: design, structural analysis, and software development. Recent projects handled there include structural analyses for MacGregor solutions and design and software development for Kalmar equipment.
Cargotec’s Hiab, Kalmar, and MacGregor brands are recognised leaders in cargo and load handling solutions worldwide. Group sales totalled €2.6 billion in 2010 and the company employs around 10,500 people.
