Cruise ferries, pilot cutters, and yachts

The keel of newbuilding 1376, a new-generation cruise ferry ordered by Viking Line, was laid at the STX Turku Shipyard in early March. The 218-metre long vessel is scheduled for delivery at the beginning of 2013.

To be known as the M/S Viking Grace, the ship will be the most environmentally friendly large cruise ferry ever. Fuelled by liquefied natural gas (LNG), its airborne emissions will be significantly lower than those of any other ships and waterborne emissions will be zero.

The Turku shipyard is one of three operated by STX Finland; the others are in Rauma and Helsinki. The Helsinki facility, known as Arctech Helsinki Shipyard Oy, is a joint venture with Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation and specializes in icebreakers and other Arctic offshore and special vessels.

Going with aluminium

At the other end of the size spectrum, aluminium is the material of choice for KewaTec Aluboat and Buster.

KewaTec AluBoat specialises in 7-20 metre boats for pleasure and professional use. Production was kicked off with a fleet of over 30 Jurmo-class boats for the Finnish Defence Forces. These were followed by various fast, water jet-powered boats designed in-house, and the product range now comprises work boats, oil spill prevention and response boats, pilot cutters, taxi boats, and pleasure boats.

Buster Boats is another boatbuilder with a passion for aluminium, and Europe’s largest manufacturer of aluminium boats. The vast majority of the over 100,000 boats delivered to customers over the past 50 years are still in use, a testament to the durability of AHT – Aluminium Hull Technology by Fiskars.

Buster’s use of over-dimensioned hull stiffeners make their boats highly durable, giving them sturdy handling characteristics, while keeping them light. Rigid transoms allow for powerful engines, and carefully designed hull shapes result in good performance in heavy seas.

One of the world’s best-known yacht-builders

Yachts are also a particular strength of Finnish boatbuilding, and Nautor’s range of Swan yachts is probably the most well-known of all.

Established back in 1966 to build the first 10m fibreglass yacht capable of both cruising and racing, the company has since become one of the most innovative yacht manufacturers anywhere, with 1,900 Swans produced to date.

Thanks to a high-tech yard capable of producing yachts over 100ft, Nautor’s current portfolio ranges from the Swan 45 to the Swan 131, while the Swan Custom programme focuses on unique designs.
